Box of million things

Many people have these - a box that gold assorted things. Things that you might one day need, so they need to be stored somewhere. Just in case. In Finnish that's called miljoonalaatikko (literally a million box), a box of million things. Junk box I think it's called in English.

I might not have a million things in my box(es), but there is a lot of stuff in there. All sorts of pieces that might come handy in right kind of need. Especially as I often find myself tinkering with and hacking things to better suit my need.

Unfinished tales

Having something ro watch is not a problem with all the streaming services having abundance of content available. There is also nee content produced all the time. The problem is more about deciding what to watch.

I don't watch that much TV so there is plenty of shows and movies to watch. I have a long list of those on my watchlist as long as I can decide what to watch next. One generic thing are some of the list of movie series that haven't been quite in the must see territory, but something I would still like to see.

Reluctantly to leave home

I've become too accustomed staying home. Luckily my work doesn't require me to visit the office too often. Mostly it's just voluntary visits to go there, to meet the people. I've found it hard recently to justify myself going there if it's not absolutely necessary. I know I should visit there more often. It just feels too exhausting.

Endless possibilities

The A.I. graze is still going strong. While the new A.I. models promise all kinds of great advances and they do offer many kinds of help with common tasks there still hasn't been a true groundbreaking product coming out of it. It's more of a gradual improvements in many areas and even if it doesn't seem like a big change after the initial hype the change is definitely there. In the end it might be the biggest technological step forward we have ever taken.

Washing bricks

I finally got my second lot of LEGO bricks sorted and started going through the third one. The first two lots were rather clean so there wasn't much else to do than remove all the trash and non+LEGO pieces from those. This third one is another story. The bricks are quite dirty and there is a lot of dust, sand and other small trash mixed with them.

How am I doing

As a manager of ober 60 people I have a lot of 1-on-1 discussions with those people. I always start our conversations with asking how are they doing. Together with my closing question "how can I help you" those are the most important questions of those meetings. Everything else is just details and vary between conversations and people.

Old stuff

I noticed a sale of "vintage LEGO" at the marketplace I follow to find new items to my collection and keep up with the price trends. To my shock the seller wss offering sets from the 90's! Not quite vintage to me.

While the term vintage isn't strictly defined it is usually used for items more than 40 years old. I personally consider items made before I was born as vintage. So I would call those sets retro at best even though for me personally they were already too new even for that.

Last day of the year

Adding a day to the end of the second month of the year in leap years might seem an odd choice. Of course it's the shortest month so makes sense to make it a bit longer on those years. But like many things there are historical reasons to it.

Our calendar, the Julian calendar system comes from Romans. It replaces the earlier Gregorian calendar system and there were other systems before that. The earliest Roman calendars actually started the year from March so February was the last month of the year.

Invalid date

Datetime calculations are one of the hardest things to get right in software development. Even though there are (somewhat) clear rules how the time works there are still a lot of variations that can cause all sorts of issues.

Extra post

This year is a leap year meaning there is an additional day during this year (today). This also means I need to write one additional post this year compared to a regular year.

During my writing streak there has been three leap years in total. The first one, in 2016 was also the first leap year, but it didn't yet affect my yearly writing score as I only started writing towards the end of the year. So this is actually only the second extra post I have had to write so far.

Knowing when to stop

I have been sorting my second haul of LEGO pieces into sets recently. So far I have been able to identify roughly a hundred sets from that pile and there are still some pieces left. The problem is that even though I'm fairly certain from which sets some of those parts are there are so few bricks left they wouldn't be enough for some of the remaining sets even if all the remaining pieces were from a single set.

Tracking habits

In forming and retaining habit tracking the progress is quite vital element for success. Tracking leads to streaks and streaks are hard to break so by the time you might break them the new habit has most likely already formed and you don't need such helpers to keep it up.

Some years ago I went a bit overboard with tracking such habits. I don't remember the details, but I had quite many streaks hoing on, many of them for over a year. At that point it wasn't about forming new habits anymore - I had formed an additional habit of tracking habits.

In full colour

Searching through random piles of LEGO bricks is a good training for the brain. It enhances the pattern recognition abilities that are useful in many situation. With the huge variety of different colours those bricks come from it also helps becoming better at distinguishing those colours.

Travel expenses

While driving electric car there is the worry about range it wasn't worry free back when driving an internal combustion engine either. In extremely rare cases those might have been being able to get to the next station, but usually it was more about the gas prices.

While the gas prices are relatively steady (raising at constant rate) there is still some fluctuation in them. There is also some difference in prices between stations. So it was more about finding the cheapest station just to save a few cents per liter.

Keeping on the road

Our current car is the third one that has the active lane keeping assistant feature. Over the past decade the development of such assistive technologies in cars has been quite rapid. Looking back at all the cars I have owned prior to those the difference is quite remarkable.

Good bye range anxiety

Today I had a lot of driving around once again. At some point I caught myself occasionally checking the remaining range estimate and doing the math in my head whether it would be enough (with a safe margin) to get me through the whole trip. Even though I knew from the beginning that there should be plenty of range left even with the worst case estimates at the end of my trip. Habits just stick strong.

Searching for alternatives

From the beginning of the modern web the search has been one of the most important features to discover content. From the beginning those services have usually also been free for the users.

However as the saying goes: "if you are not paying for it you're the product being sold". Dominant search services of today are bot catering to your needs. They are optimized to gather as much information from you as possible, and ensuring you are coming back for more.

Feet up

Even though my job can be described as a traditional office job, the kind where you spend a whole day sitting at your desk I tend to stand up roughly half of the time. Having an adjustable desk makes it easy to alternate between different positions which is good for your health. "Sitting kills" they say.

Standing for too long can kill as well, at leat your feet. Sometimes when it's an intensive day I might forgot to sit down every now and then and at the end of the day realize I have been standing the whole day.

I don't want to

I don't want to write another post about not being able to come up with anything to write. It hasn't happened for a while now. Can't remember when the last time was. I just remember it wasn't just a single day, but a several days of struggling. Was I stressed out back then? Or just tired? Maybe sick...
