Ordinary, wonderful day

Yesterday we spent most of the day together with my wife. We didn't do anything special, just being together. We've spent countless Saturdays like that when we still uses to live together, it used to be just a regular Saturday.

While we have been doing those more special date nights, which have also been nice this day however felt somehow more special. Just like the good old days. Except I really didn't appreciate such days back then.

Relatively cheap

I actively follow electricity prices as I have the spot pricing contract. Just doing a bit of homework and timing most energy consuming things can save me some money. Of course the largest usage comes from charging the car and especially knowing when to charge it can have a huge effect on my electricity bill.

Reboot the book

For years bow I have mainly read books on my Kindle. It has been working well, both technically and from the usability anf convenience point of view. I don't remember having any technical issues with it. I think I haven't even had to reboot it save the few times there has been a system upgrade that has required it.

Back on board

Our big larp project is getting closer, it's less than five months until the first run. The planning and preparations have been going on for over a year already, but now it's time to start the big push towards the game.

Too much of one topic

Sometimes I feel I'm writing way too much on some topics or repeating the same themes over and over again. It's not just about writing for so long that there wouldn't be anything left to write. It's just that often I take the easy route and write the things that are on top of my mind at the time.

It's a bit low effort, but that's the thing: writing itself is more important than the topic. It doesn't matter what I write as long as I write, even if it's about the same things or repetition (I know I have repeated this thought for many times already).

Neverending story

Our DnD campaign has been going on for around 5 years already. It was supposed to be over years ago, but we just kept going. There has been numerous times when we have kinda concluded that it's time to retire our characters and move over to the next campaign.

Yet, here we still are, playing the same campaign. Except soon it's (supposed to) finally come to an end. Our DM told us there would be only a few more sessions when the story is finally over and it's time to move into a new campaign he has been planning for quite some time already.

A cup of coffee

When I first got into pour over coffee it was delicate work to prepare the coffee. It involves multiple steps and precision measurements to get that "perfect" cup of coffee. In addition of getting a nice cup of coffee it was a kind of experience, a form of meditation even.

Since then I have learned to make that cup without paying too much attention to precise measures. There isn't really that much difference using a few grams less or more grounds, or few degrees deviation in water temperature. Even the pouring style doesn't really affect the taste that much.

Costs on the road

It sure is cheaper to drive electric car even on a longer trips when you need to charge on those public charging stations. They do charge quite a premium over the price you pay for electricity at home, but the total expense is still a fraction of what you would need to pay for gas on such trips.

"Time is money" and those charging stops do take some time. Not too much to bother me. It's just a matter of being prepared for it and planning so that you leave enough time to get to your destination in time. On longer trips you would need to stop every now and then anyway for a break.

Sort, mix, repeat

While I don't like going to search for a missing piece when I'm building a LEGO set, finding the piece when it happens is relatively easy and fast. Sometimes it's even faster than finding a correct piece from the mixed pile of bricks for a set when I happen to have all the sorted boxes at hands reach. So why bother mixing up all those pieces again after going through all the effort to sort them?

Brand new and outdated

Today I had to drive a substitute var while our new car was at the repair shop. No, there is nothing wrong with it, it's just getting it's windshield replaced. I noticed a small crack at the windshield back when I was test driving it and requested it to be repaired before making the deal. The dealer agreed and told me I could either get the car in a few days and bring it back when the new windshield arrives or wait a couple of weeks. Of course I couldn't wait, even with this little hassle of getting the car back there and having a substitute for a couple of days.

Mirror screen

I hate reflective screens! For my laptop and external screens I always opt for matte screens. Unfortunately there is no phone maker that provides that option for any of their phones. To solve this issue I have been using matte screen protectors to get rid of that annoying glare.

Fun on their own, not so together

Putting random piles of LEGO brocks back into sets has several steps. After acquiring a mixed pile of LEGO the first step is sorting the bricks into different piles based on their shape. After identifying the potential sets the next step is collecting all the pieces for that set and listing the missing pieces. Then I need to go hunting for the missing pieces. When I finally have (hopefully) all the pieces it's time to start building.

The doomsday algorithm

Now that I have gone through all the things to remember when calculating the weekday of any given date it's finally time to go through the actual algorithm. The basic odea is to figure out the weekday of the doomsday and then use those dates to calculate the weekday of the actual date relative to them.

Dates to remember, part 2

Final thing you need to memorize before you can use the doomsday algorithm are the actual "doomsday dates". These are the dates across the year that fall on the same weekday. Of course you can add or subtract any multiples of seven if you feel you have better mnemonics for any particular month.

Dates to remember

To figure out the weekday of any given date you need two things: a list of numbers to remember and the way to calculate the doomsday number for any given year.

There are 3 set of numbers to remember. The first one is easy, just the order number of the weekday. Starting from Monday as 1, Tuesday as 2 and so on. Except Sunday is 0. So kinda like starting the week from Sunday and counting from zero instead of Monday and one.

What day is it?

There sometimes comes situations when you need to know the weekday of some particular date. If it's close enough to the current date, or some other date you know the weekday it's quite simple to count the weekday. But when you don't have any reference point it becomes a trickier.

The doomsday algorithm solves that problem. It's a simple mathematical formula you can use to calculate the weekday of any date. In addition to knowing the formula you also need to memorize few set of rules to assign certain numbers based on the century the date is on and a number for each month.

Filling up the silence

Apart from all those beeping noises and warnings the new car does have some other ways to make up the lack of engine sounds. The mandatory VESS is there, now it can't be turned off anymore. I wish they could have done the same with the speed limit notification as they did with the VESS before it became mandatory.

All the bells and whistles

When I first got my hands on on our previous car I thought it had everything. Well, there were two things missing that I knew of, but it felt like there wasn't anything else one can hope from a car. After two test drives, driving the new car back home and a couple of hours of driving around just for the joy the old car seems so outdated. The new car has everything, even those two features I was missing on the old one. And then some more!
