Parento principle

Note: not to be confused with Pareto principle. I made this one up.

Being a parent is hard work. There is a lot of things you want to keep your kids away from. The same things you, on your youth, wanted to do.

When I was young I had a lot of things I wanted to do, and once I got a bit older did do despite my parent's attempts and wishes to prevent me from doing. It was hard for me to see their point of view back then. It just felt stupid I couldn't do things my way.

Now, after many years as a parent myself, I'm facing situations where the roles have shifted. I have become the parent and my kids, in turn, want to do something I don't agree with. Something I would totally have done back in the days I were of their age.

Some of those things are such that after all these years of experience I would still totally do. Other things, after the same experience, I do agree with my parents were bad ideas.

It's hard to find the balance with such things. It's hard to even know which approach is the correct one. On the other hand, the parent does have more experience, but then again the world changes. There are things that weren't relevant back in the days. Maybe the new generation is right once in a while as well. At least we are not living in your grandparent's world anymore.
