Welcome to the future

It's year 2020, the year of Cyberpunk (sure true players know the original edition was set on year 2013). During the last two decades a lot of old sci-fi settings have become past.

Sure, there are new sci-fi set into the near future written every decade. And it wasn't different in the past either. But for me personally, the last two decades were the ones when a lot of the sci-fi I used to consume during my youth finally came to pass.

What makes those years special is the fact those books, movies and games defined a lot of my childhood. They were things created during my time, but also set in the time I would live to see. True inspiration and vision of the future. Giving hope and forward looking attitude, sometimes also fear.

Most of those have now set into past already. There isn't much to look forward about them. Sure, there is lot of predictions yet to happen. And for those more dystopian visions that's a good thing. But we don't have flying cars, moon bases or interstellar travel either.

Later sci-fi, written during the last decades doesn't anymore give me the same feeling. Even if it's still set to happen during my lifetime. I have lost the childlike wonder and become more cynical critic of all those crazy ideas.
