It will be on the ground for millions of years

We produce a lot of plastic. It's everywhere. Despite increasing efforts to recycle it a lot of it ends up into the landfills. There it will remain for a very long time, maybe even millions of years..

But this isn't the first time something new and carbon based, non biodegradable substance ends up on the ground. 350 million years ago, during the Carboniferous era when trees had just evolved they stayed on the ground due to the lack of anything that could degrade them. They piled up during the millions of years it took the bacteria and fungus to evolve to eat them. Resulting finally into those trees polluting the sir during the past centuries in the form of coal.

In time, there will be things eating plastic as well. Maybe there will be some amount of current plastic left to earth for unforeseeable future to turn into another deposit of coal to pollute some future civilisations air. Or maybe not. The first plastic eating bacteria has already been found.

Maybewe don't have yo worry that much about depositing all that plastic. As long as it ends up in a good landfill instead of being burnt or dumped into the oceans. But the recycling is still the best option.
