Phone hunting

Today, I ended up doing something unexpected: hunting a phone. Well, more like trying to lure it out of it's hole.

Yesterday my daughter was with her friend in the woods. While there they were hanging out on top of a pile of boulders and ended up dropping her phone down to the cavity between the rocks.

The cavities kept going deeper and deeper between the stones and there were no telling which turn the phone had taken in all those intersections. So it was pretty much a lost cause.

Except I refused to give up so easily. Sure we could just have claimed the insurance money and get a new phone. But I at least wanted to give it a try to retrieve it.

So she lead me there and I see the boulders and the deep caverns beneath. Using find my phone feature we were able to hear it, but due to weird acoustic down there it was still hard to locate the phone. Then we hit a bit of luck: a message was received by the phone lighting up the screen just at the right moment to reveal us it's location. It was indeed deep down there. If it would have been any deeper the mole people would have thought it as a gift from the gods above.

Still not giving up, after all now we knew exactly where the phone was. We just weren't able to reach it. Quick situstion assesment and trip to the store and we were back in the game with proper equipment (and some creative makeshift ones too).

After several hours we were finally able to get close enough to the phone by removing enough of those boulders from the way. Then it was just a matter of reaching out our state-of-the art tool made for the purpose (a stick with a plastic bag attached to the other end held open with a metal wire and another stick to push the phone in to the bag).

That's the true spirit of Finnish sisu , not giving up just because something seems impossible but doing it anyway and gritting it through no matter how hard it might be and disregarding whether doing it is pointless.
