Electric cars still have a lot to catch up

While I might gloat over the troubles of those who still own non-electric cars, or being smug about how much more ecological electric vehicles are they still have their own woes. The internal combustion engine powered vehicles still have over a hundred years lead on technology and infrastructure.

Moving around with your own car, especially long distance, is highly dependant on service network. While it seems that the electric charging stations are more widely spread than the gas stations as these are popping up on more than just gas stations: shops, public spaces and other services want to attract customers by offering charging spots. Sometimes even for free.

But the amount of those charging networks who provide the charging points to these companies is one problem. Where at the gas station it's straight forward card payment that is de facto in charging everybody wants to have their own app for it. It feels like every time I need to charge on new location I need to install a new app just to be able to use it. Sure they do offer card payment options as well, but they are usually cumbersome to use, still tied to phone / webapp and cost more than when using their on app. Another option is to use one of the roaming services which try to bring many of the operators under one app. But they usually also have higher rates and still doesn't cover all the networks.

Another issue is the reliability of the charging stations, networks and those apps. So far I might have been lucky, but today was the first time a charging point didn't work. Actually none of the several points at the location was working. First two just refused to start charging and the third one seemingly did start the charging process but coming back to the car after 45 minutes break it hadn't charged at all. Luckily this wasn't the only option along the route.
