Story of a foam

You don't have to be dyslexic to read words wrong (but it helps). It's usually the first encounter that determines whether you get it right or wrong. After that our minds tend to optimize things and just use the stored interpretation instead of bothering to go through each letter.

Only later when you try to write the word and see the red line under it you realize your mistake. Of course if you never have the need to write the word you will probably never find out.

I just yesterday encountered one such word. For some reason the name of the expanded polystyrene used in for example packaging has always been storyfoam in English. Even as it's commonly called styrox in Finnish I never doubted the swapped vocals. I just assumed English is just being weird (as usual). Maybe there just was some story behind that foam interesting enough to be trademarked or something.

I might have been wrong (again), but at least I did have a story to tell about it. Maybe next time I will now remember it's "y" before "o" in this story.
