Mutant cats

Scottish fold is a cat breed with distinctive look due to their forward folding ears. This feature, when first appeared at the scottish farm during the early sixties made the breed quite desirable.

Unfortunately the mutation that causes the folding also causes anomalies to their bone structure. Due to these anomalies they are prone to severe bone and cartilage problems that can be quite painful. Because of this the life expectancy of Scottish folds is only between two and six years.

Because of their conditions many cat authorities are not recognizing them as official breed and the breeding of them is discouraged. Despite all this the breed is unfortunately quite popular and in demand due to their rarity.

We might be in the unique position of getting one. There was a litter born at the animal shelter my wife volunteers. Because the special conditions they can't be given out to normal adoption. Instead, they need a home where their condition is understood and the foster family is well aware that there might be additional costs due more frequent vet visits and they are also prepared for the shorter life expectancy. Never the less, the hope is they'd get a caring family prepared to let them go when the time comes.
