Brick to the future

(Alternative title: Brick & Marty)

It's been awhile since I've got any new LEGO. We got some minifigs some years ago for our DnD campaign, but actual LEGO sets? Must be nearly a decade ago when my wife got me the then new Mindstorm EV3 robotics kit. It was a childhood dream come true as the original Mindstorm set was something I always wanted, but never got.

I hadn't been thinking much about LEGO since then until recently when LEGO announced the release of a kit based on another childhood icon of mine: the timemachine from the Back to the Future movies. Two of the best part of my childhood put together! I just had to get it.

Unfortunately I missed the first patch. It was sold out almost immediately. Luckily it wasn't just a single production run set, so when they were back on stock last week I acted immediately. Incidentally this happened nicely close to my birthday so I could call it a birthday present.

I got the set on Saturday but as we had quests over I didn't get to open it until yesterday afternoon. After what felt just a moment I realized it was already getting late so I had to leave it unfinished. Today I could hardly wait until the workday was over (I did end it a bit early) to finish the build.

In total it took me around 5 hours to build the whole kit. With a set consisting over 1800 pieces I think that was quite fast. I still got the skill.

The kit includes 3 different finishes, one for each movie. While the 3rd movie isn't my favourite from the series I still opted to build the model from it. Even of the movie isn't the best I think the version of the DeLorean in it nicely combines the base model with the more advanced additions from the future like the Mr.Fusion reactor and makeshift "old tech" from the western era.

It was fun building a real LEGO kit after so long. I know there has been these high end sets for some time already, but I hadn't realized what kind of great details they can include. I might need to get more of those on the future. Too bad they aren't exactly cheap :(
