Return to the Moon

Artemis I was supposed to be launched recently. Unfortunately there was some hydrogen leaks detected and the launch was postponed. The next launch window will 19th of this month if everything goes well and the issues are being fixed by then.

The Artemis program is really exciting endeavour. While the first missions will focus on getting back to moon, the long term goal of the project is establishing a moon base and taking humans to Mars.

The first mission will be be unmanned. The goal is just to fly the rocket around the moon and back. The next mission, Artemis II will be the first space flight in five decades after the last moon landing by the Apollo program that will take human again beyond the LEO (low earth orbit). This flight too will still only be a flyby over the moon. We still need to wait a couple more years until the next generation of moon landers will set 5heir foot on the surface of the moon. The plan is to have that mission, the Artemis III taking place in 2025.

Even though the technology has taken vast advancements since the last moon lanfing the core technologies taking a human to the moon still remains pretty much the same: burning a lot of flammable material under a long tube with a small capsule attached on top and launching it towards the moon. We still haven't figured any better way getting off of this rock.
