I am being followed

I just recently received a mail from Google. A report of my location history from last year. It's quite a scary stuff how much they do know about my whereabouts.

On the other hand, it was nice seeing some statistics about the places I have been during the year. Some interesting things to notice. But I'm not sure that data is actually useful for me, just a nice to know. If I would have to pay for it I wouldn't bother.

So I wouldn't miss that data either if I would opt out from the pervasive location tracking. But I'm not sure how much they would respect that preference anyway. There are so many tracks left behind even without explicitly allowing the tracking that it wouldn't really make that much difference. And going all in abandoning modern tech and focusing on gadgets that are private and untrackable would also mean giving up with a lot of features I'm used to live with.

So it comes down to trust. Do I trust my data in the hands of a huge foreign company? Do I really care about my privacy that much compared to how much I like the convenience those services offer? It's a slippery slope. Giving in to one thing will lead to another and paves the way to an Orwellian surveillance state. These are dangerous thoughts.
