The day we learned to destroy the world

75 years ago today the Sun was rising over New Mexico half an hour early. The Trinity, worlds first nuclear bomb had been detonated. The light was blinding tens of kilometers away, the shockwave could be felt as far as 100 kilometers from the ground zero. The iconic mushroom cloud rose up to 12 kilometers up in the sky.

If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one ...

As the creators celebrated the successful test results and were humbled by the raw power and beauty of the explosion only few realized the gravity of it.

It didn't take a month before this new found force of destruction was used in the war, twice. Since, there has been over 2000 test detonations of ever increasingly powerful bombs. The biggest ever detonated was the Soviet Zsar Bomba. It was over 3000 times more powerful than those early bombs. The effects of it's detonation was felt at up to 900 kilometers away.

Luckily these bombs haven't been used since. With the combined arsenal of 9 countries possessing the nuclear weapons at around 15000 bombs we could to wipe ourselves off the planet dozens of times.
