Remote conventions

It's the Ropecon weekend again. Or would be if it wasn't canceled due to Covid. Well, the physical convention was cancelled. There is the alternate remote attendance online con going on over the weekend.

While many other things might work just fine remotely I'm not that convinced about this kind of social events. Sure the talks and other presentations can work just fine as online presentations and webinars. You can also easily get rid of your money browsing the virtual bazaar where sellers can display their goods.  The latter already loses a lot of it's attraction in the online form. There is just something fascinating browsing those sales tables physically.

But the biggest thing missing is the social mingling and the general atmosphere. The feeling of being part of something big. Even for an introvert like me that is something I have always looked forwarded in these kind of events. It's just a lot harder to het that same feeling online.
