Pies like bombs

One of the signature foods from the region I'm from is a kind of a meat pie that is filled with either cooked egg or ham, or both. Nowadays there are similar pies sold all over Finland, but you can only get the real originals from Lappeenranta marketplace or harbour. The location definitely is part of the experience.

The version with only one of the fillings is called atomi (that's atom in Finnish) and when you take both that's vety (hydrogen). According to the records they were named during the fifties like that by the local cafeteria owner who stated: it's better to eat than make war. An apparent reference to the second world war.

Since not living around the region anymore there hasn't been that many options to enjoy this delicacy, so obviously once here you won't want to miss an opportunity to get one.

The only debate is whether the proper ham used should be cured or cooked.
