Unreadable gender pronouns

When I'm reading English sometimes I become confused when the writer has used just the person pronouns of two people of different gender. I know it's obvious to a native English speaker to understand what's going on. But for me it can get confusing when I understand all those pronouns as a same concept in my head. They just refer to a person.

Of course I understand the difference. But it just happens naturally as a Finnish speaker that I read those two (or more) things as one genderless thing. Even if I don't exactly translate what I'm reading into Finnish in my head I do translate the concept.

This also doesn't just happen when I'm reading. I don't need more than two gender pronouns to accidentally offend somebody by referring them by the wrong pronoun. There are times when I actually need to make a conscious effort to get the gender right. If I don't pay attention I might just say which ever happens to come out of my mouth. I'm sure there is some logic on which one I happen to choose as it isn't always the one or the other. I just hope if I ever forget to pay attention that my logic isn't biased like the Google translate for example.
