Billable work

I don't do much of any billable work in my current role. Save from the ad hoc high level consulting gigs my value mostly comes indirectly rather than from direct billable customer work.

I've had my doubts whether I even could do that kind of work anymore. It's been so long since I have been actively coding, or troubleshooting that I might be a bit rusty on those. Even if those skills are like riding a bike, the bike keeps evolving so fast it's hard to keep up even when you are actively using those skills and technologies.

Today I got affirmation that at least my analytical troubleshooting skills are still sharp. While most of the developers and majority of our ops are on vacation there aren't thar many people who can jump in when something happens. Even our on-call staff were on a public holiday today so all that was left was me. I'm the backup of all the backups.

It didn't take long for the first issue to arise. It also didn't take long for me to resolve it. Sure, it wasn't the most complex and challenging one, but not a trivial one either.
