Being sustainable is a big trend nowadays. Every tech company is promoting their commitment to environmental sustainability. But how many are actually doing everything they can for the sake of this quite necessary cause?
Big tech has bold claims on their current sustainability and ambitious goals reaching net zero emissions in various timescales. But especially in hardware business these companies want to sell you their latest gadget version every year.
It doesn't matter how sustainable those devices are produced if they end up as e-waste while still completely usable. That's only sustainable for their own business growth.
Another thing is using compensation like carbon offsets to reach those impressively low net emissions. Most of the compensation methods are questionable and their long term effects are uncertain. At the same time the growth of IT industry is eating up big portion of new energy production so it means the overall emissions aren't going down fast enough because these companies want to feel good while growing their profits.
Among all these late capitalistic companies there are few exceptions that truly want to do everything they can to actually deliver sustainable products. They are also the only honest companies that, despite their monumental efforts of optimizing their sourcing and manufacturing processes as well as longevity and maintainability of their products are the first one to admit they are not sustainable (yet).
