Costs on the road

It sure is cheaper to drive electric car even on a longer trips when you need to charge on those public charging stations. They do charge quite a premium over the price you pay for electricity at home, but the total expense is still a fraction of what you would need to pay for gas on such trips.

"Time is money" and those charging stops do take some time. Not too much to bother me. It's just a matter of being prepared for it and planning so that you leave enough time to get to your destination in time. On longer trips you would need to stop every now and then anyway for a break.

While the electricity is cheap those stops do also cost something. While leaving the car plugged in spending time at the gas station usually means taking some refreshments. Of course that's optional, but why not while you are there anyway.

I did the numbers on our recent trip earlier this month and while we only paid a bit over 10 euros for the electricity we spent over 50 euros on coffee and snacks along the way. That's still cheaper than what it would have cost us just in gas to drive that distance.
