How am I doing

As a manager of ober 60 people I have a lot of 1-on-1 discussions with those people. I always start our conversations with asking how are they doing. Together with my closing question "how can I help you" those are the most important questions of those meetings. Everything else is just details and vary between conversations and people.

At my position I'm expected to ask those questions. I should be aware of how they are doing and if there is anything that might affect their work. It's my duty to make sure they have everything fine and help them anyway I can if that's not the case. Those meetings are for them!

It's a two-way relationship. I don't expect them to be interested in my wellbeing, but sometimes I hear them asking the same questions from me. It's a nice gesture. Sure, sometimes asked just for the sake of courtesy, but still, it feels nice. After all, we are colleagues, working towards shares goals. It's just a matter of perspective and responsibilities.
