Internet of Updates

Internet brought us connected devices. Mobile technologies made it not tied to the wire, but unfortunately we still don't have wireless electricity so all those connected devices need to be charged. With advancements of battery technology and the emergence of Internet of Things at least some of the devices can be powered for years while we are waiting for better batteries (or wireless energy transfer).

But even if those devices could live forever without the need to be charged they still need software updates. It's not enough to remember to charge all your devices, you also need to keep them up to date.

Sure, those updates could be automated, but that's a two-edged sword. It would be convenient to let them all take care of updating themselves, but such a mechanism is a huge attack vector for malicious actors. Letting a device ro update without users consent is also problematic in a sense that we want to feel in control. We want to decide what our devices are allowed to do. And sometimes we just want to stick to the old versions because new version is always a chance to lose some old features, introduce a change we don't like or just bring some new bugs.

So we are doomed to click through ever increasing number of dialogs prompting us to allow those updates. I doubt not many give a second of thought about what the update brings, we just want to get back using our devices.
