Just enough structure

Part of my new role is having my "own" organization within the company. Although I'm bo longer a direct supervisor to anybody I will still have (or have even more) ownership on a crucial part of our structure.

Over the years I have seen things both fail and succeed. But never have those been things that satisfy everybody. We are different and making something that works for everybody is near impossible. It would only be possible if the people would have been hired in the first place based on the criterias abiding by the structure and policies. That, on the other hand would limit the pool of potential candidates and leave many talented people out of our reach. So the best I can do is "good enough" for everyone. Even that won't be easy, but at least it gives me some hope.

One of the biggest difference between people in regard of structure is the rigidness of those structures themselves. Some people enjoy freedom and wont feel comfortable if there are too many rules and too strict boundaries for what they can do and how they can do it. Other people enjoy strict rules that are easy to follow. It also gives them clear expectations and not that much responsibility.

Both have their sides. Those who prefer freedom can be more creative, but at the same time (especially with larger organizations) it can be hard to manage all that creative chaos. Too much structure on the other hand kills all the innovation. While people might be more effective and everything is easier to manage and steer they tend to fall into conformity and just "do their job".
