Old book language

When reading old books sometimes the language might feel old. The language evolves constantly, so that's not s surprise. But sometimes it accidentally makes the reading experience better.

When reading either fantasy or historical fiction the old language actually makes the experience feel more authentic. Of course many modern authors use this method for that exact effect. But I have read older books where the case definitely wasn't this.

Ancillary gender pronouns

Ancillary justice is the first book of Ann Leckie's space opera trilogy Imperial Radch. Among other things it introduces us the space faring culture of Radchaai who, while expanding across the galaxy have abandoned the concept of gender.

Ann denotes this gender neutrality by using the female she as a personal pronoun for everyone. An interesting take on exploring the gender neutrality. One can just wonder why not use one of the established neutral pronouns.

Salty linguistics

In Finnish there is the word "tuima". In general it can mean something along the lines of grim, stern or severe.

But when talking about food it has two different meanings. In some regions it can mean the food is too salty. In other regions it however means the exact opposite: saltless.
