Book review: Genesis

Genesis by Bernard Beckett is classified as young adults book, but don't be fooled by its lightness. It's only light by the count of pages. It's easy enough to read in one afternoon, but it will leave you pondering for days. In a way, it's Sofie's world meets 1984. A dystopian world with surprisingly deep thoughts.

It's also written in an unconventional way. Throughout the book, you will be following an interview with a teenage girl who is applying to an academy. It is written as a dialogue between the girl and her auditors. While the girl is giving her answers she is telling another story.

Unfortunately, it's quite impossible to tell anything more about the book without giving away its biggest secrets. You really don't want its ending to get spoiled.

In a sense, it wasn't anything new. I have read countless of books with similar twists, maybe half a dozen with the exact same idea. I usually see such twists coming far ahead. Not this time. Maybe I underestimated the book, but it caught me off guard. That hasn't happened for a while. And maybe that is one thing that made me love the book. It was a refreshing experience.
