Death of the desktop

The year of the Linux Desktop has been coming for years, even decades. But it never happened. And it won't happen as the desktop operating system has become irrelevant. The desktop is mainly used to run a single desktop application: the Browser. Even that usage is diminishing and threatening the desktop Computer itself as well as it's little cousin the Laptop. It's all in mobile devices nowadays. And even there the Apps are losing.

It's all in the Web. And web doesn't care where you run it. It works everywhere, in all operating systems and platforms. There is very little the web can't do that those other platforms can.

The operating system, the platform that runs all those applications isn't running locally anymore. Your device is just a remote client accessing those resources over the Internet in the Cloud. And the cloud is mostly running on Linux.

In a sense, Linux actually won at the end. Most of the mobile devices are also running on a Linux based platform. So even if it's not necessarily running on your particular device you are still a Linux user. The year of the Linux desktop has arrived (minus the desktop).
