Old or new?

Picking a book to read is one of those things I can spend way more time than necessary. It's not that I wouldn't have anything to read, quite the opposite. I think I currently have hundreds of books on my reading list. It's so much that often I find myself looking for something to read outside of it anyway.

Sometimes I want to be sure I'll be reading something good. Then it might feel like a good idea to pick something by one of my favorite authors. Of course that doesn't guarantee everything they write is excellent, or abide by my taste. Besides, I've probably already read everything by them.

Something new is always nice to read. I like new ideas and perspectives. But there is always the risk that it doesn't work after all. Sometimes something that sounds different can also turn out to be just the same old with a different nuance.

After all, it's not that big of a commitment. I crawl through an average book in a week or two, so even if it's bad it'll be over soon enough. Sure, one could just abandon the book unfinished if it doesn't feel satisfying. But I couldn't do that. I think I have never left a book unfinished, no matter how bad it was.
