Easy hard problems

I love solving problems. That's the reason I have ended up in software engineering. And even there I have always looked for the hardest problems.

Those aren't actually that hard after all. There is always clear goals, logical reasons and measurable progress. Even the hardest problems are easily solvable when you know how and where you need to get.

For couple of years now I have been steering more into less formal problems. The ones involving uncertainty, involving people. Those are the real hard problems. The goals aren't that clear and there is some room for interpretation. The progress is also harder to measure and your actions might have unpredictable results.

I love solving problems, but I'm not sure anymore if I love it so much as to move into the second category.  Sure, they offer nee challenges and learning opportunities. But lately, due to circumstances, I have had a rare opportunity to return doing work involving problems from the former category. And I have to say I have really enjoyed it.

I'm not sure if I have made a right choice venturing more into sales and management. I believe there is still room to grow on the technical expertise side as well.
