Golden age of boardgames

While there hasn't been shortage of great boardgame publishers in recent years there is still room for more. That's why today was a great day for boardgsme enthusiasts as there not only one but two big announcement in the industry.

Legendary game designer Chris Metzen who was the visionary behind Blizzards big hits like Warcraft, Diablo and StarCraft just announced his new tabletop game company. There was also announcement from Critical role, the D&D live play show by talented voice actors turned internet phenomenon, who announced their entry to the market as well.

Sure, success in computer games or YouTube series doesn't guarantee quality, but on the other hand, despite growing markets, the hobbyist audience is still relatively small. Outside the Monopoly and the likes not many hit games make more than a few millions at best. Those who are after the markets really need to be dedicated and passionate about their projects.

Outside the digital markets I believe the true hobbyist games market will remain a niche despite the huge growth. Big companies, while they will definitely try, will not be able to dominate the markets as I don't believe they could put the required passion and dedication behind those projects. They will most likely rely on the popular franchises leaving the more imaginative side to the independent small developers. Or maybe they just try to find their next Monopoly and print that one to it's death with endless retheming too.
