Yodeller

Welcome to the Yodeller: my ongoing project to try and write something every day. You can read more about the background from here. If you are a new reader you might want to start from the beginning.

Making decisions

Quite often the decisions we make also affect others. Even when they only affect ourself we are not sure about them. In those cases we tend to seek for approval for our decisions from others. Permission or validation for our actions.

If you seek permission for every decision you make a lot of things might be left undone. You are too embarrassed to ask, or don't want to bother all the time. It could even be so that there are nobody to ask from when you get some quick opportunity.

Making decisions is taking responsibility. You have to answer the consequences whatever you choose. It's ok to fail as long as you are ready to admit it. That's the best way to learn.

Hovever you don't have to do all your decisions on your own. You can always ask for opinions and feedback from others. You also need to learn the limits of your reaponsibilities. Some decisions might still be not yours to make. But when you need somebody else to decide make sure you provide them with all the information they need.

Helping others

Helping myself is one thing but what I would like to do is also help others, those close to me. But I don't know how. Have I focused on myself too much.

I hope that improving myself I could become better person and that way the change could affect the people around me. I do it for them. Put I don't want to leave them behind me, don't want them to feel inferior. I want to take them with me.

I want to help them improve and change too, to find their direction, form their own habits. Now I can only hope to inspire them with my example. But they have to find it by themself, walk it with their own strength.

I need to help myself first, put the oxygen mask on for myself before helping others.

Seeing your work disappear

I just had one of the best writings I've written here so far. Or at least that's how I felt after accidentally hitting the wrong button resulting in that text disappearing into nothingness.

I hope I can recall what I wrote, but not today. I'm out of time and don't have time for that anymore.

For the future I should probably think of ways to prevent such mistakes.

The naming of things

The wizard of Earthsea is one of my all time favorite books. It has many great qualities, but one of the most intriguing ones is the unique consept of magic. In Earthsea the power comes from knowing the true name of things.

In real life we don't (unfortunately) have magic. But words can still have power. If you can name it, you can change it. It's a lot easier to realize your meaning when you have the correct words for it. It's hard to lak about something you don't have words for.

When speaking about things it's easy to misunderstand the message if the meaning of the words used is unclear. They can often have multiple meanings making it harder to understand others. Challenging and complex ideas might even require new words to be used, or at least some old words reused in new contexts.

It's a good idea to establish a clear lexicon so that it is clear what those words mean in certain context. That can minimize the chance of misunderstanding.

Knowing the true names of things gives you the power to affect those things.

No wonder the master namer was one of the most powerful and respected wizards of Earthsea.

If you can postpone it do it today anyway

There are things that don't feel that urgent. Things that can wait until tomorrow. The urgency seldom changes the next day. You can once again postpone them until tomorrow, indefinitely.

If it doesn't take a lot of time do it right away. There is no point postponing such trivial tasks. Just get it out from youd todo list. Even better, deal with it before you even need to put it into your list.

If you absolutely don't have time for those small tasks make sure you add it to your todo list. Then when you have 15 minutes you can go through your list and clear such task away from it. If you constantly find yourself skipping any particular task start a counter for it. This way you see how long it has been sitting there. If it gets to a really high number maybe it's not even worth doing.

If the task is not doable right away, for example because it needs more time or you need something you don't currently have at your disposal. in that case write it also down to your lost. If you need something to complete the task write that down too as a subtask. Then, if possible, schedule it, decide when you are going to do it.

If the task is really big you can also think of breaking it down into smaller subtasks. Maybe you can do some of those right away to get started.
