Yodeller

Welcome to the Yodeller: my ongoing project to try and write something every day. You can read more about the background from here. If you are a new reader you might want to start from the beginning.

Reminders

When everything goes well and a habit becomes natural part of your daily routine there is the danger of forgetting it if you can't follow your routine for the day. You might skip some part of it, for whatever reason and move on. But when the habit is so strong you don't even have to think about it, you might not even think about you might have skipped it.

Even if it feels natural and you are certain you'll follow your habits every day it's still a good idea to keep track of them. Set remainders so you won't accidentally skip them.

In addition of helping you not to forget or skip the habits you get a nice log of your progress. You can also keep a count on your streaks.

There are countless of apps that can help you on this. Personally I ended up choosing Loop - Habit tracker. It's a simple tracker that let's you choose the things you wish to follow. You can set reminders on your habits. It also gives you nice data on your progress, habit strength, streaks etc. And on top of all that it's also open source!

It's the idea that counts

Sometimes you just get the greatest idea too late to be executed. It needs preparation, planning and practise. Or just something you need to order from overseas.

If the idea is still good it doesn't necessarily need all those. Just put your creativity to work and come up the way to realize your idea, no matter if you have the best possible options available. If the idea is good it doesn't matter. It's the thought that counts. And it definitely is better than nothing.

It can even be better that way. For example it can inspire a story of it's own. You can tell how you originally planned it but why you couldn't, how you improvised and replaced those things you were missing with what you got. It can make your idea more interesting and memorable. It shows that you have really put an effort to make it happen despite the situation.

Sometimes you can work on your idea later to make it better, closer to original. But sometimes you just have those now or never situations. In such situation just do as much as you can and improvise the rest.

Real People

Some people just don't give a damn. They say what they think, without thinking how they might sound. They are direct, honest.

Too many of us pay way too much attention on how they appear. We make sure we don't say anything wrong. We don't want to appear rude or hurt others feelings.

There is nothing wrong being polite and considerable, but sometimes we need to hear the truth. No matter how ugly it might be. We need to know where we suck so that we can improve ourself in those areas.

Those who speak directly may appear blunt and rude. It might be harder to get to know them. But when you do they can give you so much.

I'm lucky to know few such people. I really appriciate their feedback. I can be sure they are telling the truth no matter what. And when they say something is good you can be sure they are not just saying so to make you feel better.

You can't do everything

After a while there comes the time to evaluate your choices. Are they right for you? Are you enjoying them? Are they doing any good for you?

There is no point on going on forever with something that doesn't feel right anymore. It's ok to give up and instead focus on something more interesting.

There is no point trying to do everything. Just put all the things in order by importance and think how many of those you can keep on doing at the same time. Then just abandon the rest. There is no point on doing a little bit of everything.

Same with the things you might think are important. Thinks that you feel you should be doing, but don't enjoy doing them. Or they just feel not taking you anywhere. It's a bit trickier, there probably is a reason for you to feel that they are important. If it's really important to you maybe there is another more enjoyable way of doing it.

Focus on the most important things to you. Don't try to do everything. And enjoy what you are doing.

When routines fail

I wasn't able to do my writings this morning due to technical issue. I didn't mind it. I knew I can write it later during the day. I have those remainders and everything.

But you would imagine having extra 20 minutes to take care of everything else in your morning routine would be nice. All that extra time, no need to hurry. But somehow that time just disappeared somewhere. I actually almost got late!

No matter what you do you can always occupy the whole time you allocate to it. There is no such thing as extra time, it just vanishes somewhere. So it's important to have a plan on how you are using your time. That way you get a lot more of it. If it's reserved for something, then you have time for that something. But it won't be a problem wasting that time to something else.

Routines help you to allocate and use the time effectively on useful things. But don't count on having extra time if you someday need to skip part of your routine. Just stick to the rest of it and ignore the extra time until you have done everything else. Then you'll have a clear notion of that extra time and you can do whatever within that time.
