Yodeller

Welcome to the Yodeller: my ongoing project to try and write something every day. You can read more about the background from here. If you are a new reader you might want to start from the beginning.

When great isn't enough

Once again we are one of the best places to work in Finland. But we don't need such official recognitions like GPTW, we already knew that, we work there.

Now, you might think people don't want to leave such wonderful place. Why would they if everything is so great?

Well, it's not always that simple, one size doesn't fit all.
Maybe there is something that is great for most of us, but just not for you. That's ok, we are all different, with different tastes and opinions. We enjoy different things.
Maybe you don't have anything to compare. You haven't seen enough places to judge, everything is fine, but perhaps there could be more? Or maybe it's time for a change, you need new challenges, new adventures.

There doesn't have to be anything wrong for people to leave, having everything great is not always the reason to stay. You need to follow your gut, be bold and make the move. Find the thing that is best for you. And you can always come back.

In the end great place to work comes down to people. And when you work with such great people you realize it's not where you work, but who you have worked with. And that thing doesn't change no matter where you work. They will always be there, they are still a good company.

You taught us so much.
It has been a pleasure working with you.
Bon chance mon ami!
I truly hope you'll find what you are looking for.

Skipping ahead

If I would measure my daily succeess based on my habits and the rate I'm able to keep doing it I did fail hard yesterday. I Skipped 3 out of 4 habits that I am focusing and tracking.

But that doesn't actually bother me. It's ok to skip them every now and then. What matters more is getting back on track. Skipping shouldn't become a habit. Then I would have failed.

Today I'll continue as usual, do them all again. And then tomorrow and so on. A new streak, new achievement to head towards. I don't even intent to do more today to catch up, there is no need for that.

Some time ago I was thinking of starting to write down the reasons if I would skip any of my habits, but now I don't even feel that it would be necessary. Not at least unless there are going to be a lot of them in the future.

7 virtues

Having principles to live by can help you identify yourself and also give focus to the direction you want to go.

I had three of those thought out when I started this blog: rational, simple, holistic. Quite rational choices, but a bit boring and impersonal.

Some time ago we did this exercise with my coach. Kind of free assosiation with words and then she asked me to choose some of those words that felt right. The end result was: adventure, inspiration, purpose and sharing. At first it seems like a complete different set of ideals.

They felt right, that's definitely me. But how about those other three? I still felt there is something about me in those too, something I want to live by. I think those two sets go well together, different sides of me. The rational one and rhe emotional one. They complement each other perfectly.

I hope they'll help me to better define who I am. Help me to make better choices and maintain integrity. In everything I do I try to reflect all of those ideals. They are my seven virtues.

Rational, but Adventurous,
Simple, but Inspired,
Holistic, but focusing on Purpose,
and ready to Share it all.

Early worm

I was determined to write this one in the morning. But having to wake up before 5 is a bit too early to be able to write anything sensible.

Early bird catches the worm. But the worm has to be up even earlier. No wonder it's the worm as that's what you feel like having to be up at that time.

It has been a long day: early wake up, traveling over 1500km, busy day and so on. Time difference, only if it's one hour adds to that. I don't think I feel any more awake now that I felt in the morning.

Still I couldn't miss my daily writing. I took a moment before heading out to get this off my list for the day.

No deep thoughts today, not even a proper travel journal, but at least it's done. Another day, another victory.

Plan for unusual

On a normal day it's easy to keep up with your habits. But when the day isn't normal you need to plan ahead to make it work out.

You should find out your schedule and see where your habits would fit. From there you just pretend it's a normal day and do your stuff.

The there are days you have no idea what will come up during the day. Everything is unexpected. How can you plan for something like that?

In those cases you can either try to arrange some time for your habits or just look for opportunities where you could have a moment's opening to do them.

Like Batman, you too should also have a plan for not having a plan. Just make sure that plan is not to punch everything.
