Yodeller

Welcome to the Yodeller: my ongoing project to try and write something every day. You can read more about the background from here. If you are a new reader you might want to start from the beginning.

Things worth writing down

When you have a notebook for your todos, ideas and reminders what should you write down there? Which things are worth writing?

If you just keep writing every small thing you'll end up filling your notebook really fast. It's also hard to go through all that on a daily basis to see what you should do today.

On the other hand if you just write your big ideas and high level goals there isn't much to do every day.

I have already moved all my remainders to calendar. Only when I don't have that available I write a todo to myself to put that thing there.

For small tasks you can cut the amount by simply doing them right away. No need to write it down if you can just get it done Sure for those who track their days retrospectively this is one less task done. But for that it might be better to just keep a simple daily counter of minor tasks done.

For ideas it's a bit more complex. I try to keep them somewhat categorized, so in a way instead of adding a new idea I'm just extending some existing one. I also move the ideas forward to another place so I can usually cross them over from my list.

So all that is left are the todos. Everything else still gets captured, but won't require so much attention while going through the list.

In general: just get it out of your head. Keep writing, but keep prosessing the list too. Move things forward to keep it tidy. You can always get a new one.

Feeling tired

I don't always feel like full of energy, sometimes not even enough to do all my chores. But still, I have to keep going. There are things that need to be done.

Tiredness affects your mood and motivation. Everything seems harder and there doesn't feel to be any point of doing things. It's easier to just give up and go back to sleep.

Just get up and start doing things. Tell yourself you are not too tired, not tired at all even. Try to avoid those negative thoughts and focus on the doing. And keep in mind that once you are done you can get your rest.

Having good routines can help to get you started. You can do them even when you are not fully awake yet or already half sleep.

Also don't give up your daily habits even when not feeling like doing any. Just give yourself a bit of slack and do the bare minimum. Consistency is the key.

Deciding order of things

When you have a lot to do for the day it might feel overwhelming to start. How can I get all this done? Where should I start?

You might be able to prioritize them and there might be some that are time critical. But in general it's a good idea to first look at the size of the tasks. Put them in order and identify the biggest, most demanding task.

It's a good idea to start with a few smaller tasks so you get the feeling of getting things done right from the start. This also shortens your list fast. Once you get up to speed attack that biggest task. Get it done as soon as possible. After that rest should feel easy.

After that you can work on some smaller ones, but again leave the smallest ones last. That way you can ensure there is nothing left unfinished and you won't go overtime if the time runs out. You just move those last small ones to the next day.

Early feedback

There is no such things as asking feedback too early. You might think that you should have something concrete to show before asking others opinion.

Don't wait that long. Just as soon as you have an idea go and ask somebody how does it sound. You might save yourself a lot of time not doing all those bad ideas. Or your idea might be good, but a bit off. It's good to correct the direction from the start. Much easier that way.

Telling about your project to others not only gets you the feedback but it can also give you people willing to help you in your project. You don't have to do everything by yourself.

Maybe you don't even have to do anything. It doesn't have to be you to make all those ideas into reality. You can't do them all. So let them go, share them with others. There might be people interested in doing them.

Forgetting things

I forgot a thing I was supposed go do yesterday when I get home. Not a big thing and I did get home quite late. But still I forgot.

I didn't write it down to my todos. I was too busy at the time ir came up. I also thought it was something small, something I'd remember. I might have if I'd have been at home earlier.

Now I did not read through my todos in the evening. I never do. But that's not the point. I still go through the list mentally. I don't have to remember the list. It's enough to remember there was something I should do still on the list. I use the counting method here too. I always keep count on the todos for the day.

Now I'm just going to go and do that task. Rule number... I don't know, maybe I should start numbering them ... anyway: do it right away if possible and it doesn't take much time.
