Yodeller

Welcome to the Yodeller: my ongoing project to try and write something every day. You can read more about the background from here. If you are a new reader you might want to start from the beginning.

Involved early, but expecting detailed plans

People want to be involved early in the planning phase of things, but when I introduce some new ideas they immediately start asking details about how to achieve those plans. If I instead go to them with ready made plans on a detailed level they are upset why they weren't involved earlier in the planning phase.

It's hard to balance between these two. Of course I'm not obligated to share and involve people in my plans and could just tell them what to do once the plans are ready. I wouldn't even need to share the details on reasoning behind the decisions. But I'm a big advocate of transparency and involving people in matters related to their job. I would just expect them to understand the process better and respect the chance of having a say on the plans while they still might be unfinished.

Serious hobbyist

Doing something for a hobby sounds like doing that thing more casually. But many hobbyist are the most enthusiastic people I know and take their hobbies very seriously. There is a thin line between those serious hobbyist and professionals who do similar things. Sometimes the hobbyist can even outperform the professionals. The only difference is that the later group does it (mostly) for the money.

Turning a hobby into a profession is a risky move. As long as you are doing something just for your own enjoyment there is the freedom of doing as much as you want. But earning your living can bring an unwanted stress when your living depends on it. It can also restrict you when you need to do something that sells, something that somebody is willing to pay for. You can't freely choose your direction and be truly creative.

Of course it's nice to make some extra money on the side from the things you enjoy. Hobbies can still provide that without you having to give up your freedom or having to stress too much about making a living. But often it's the other way around. You need your day job to pay for the hobby.

Theme songs

I feel like there hasn't been any memorable theme songs in recent movies or series. The latest one that comes into my mind that I could immediately recognise must be the Game of Thrones title theme. And that show came out already 13 years ago.

Is this again one of those "getting old" things? Remembering all those good old times and all the awesome shows and movies with a banger soundtracks. Or don't they just put that much effort into those anymore to make them more recognizable?

One reason could of course be the fact, at least for the series, that nobody really watches those title scenes as all the streaming services have the feature to skip them. Not much chance to stick into the memory when all you hear is the first few notes and the ending.

I hate onions

One big reason to prepare my own food is that I can make it the way I want. Of course some things can be added to those ready made meals as well to make them taste more the way I want. For example making them more spicy. But there is already something I don't like it's almost impossible to remove.

I rarely buy such meals. There are obvious benefits making your own, but the taste is one big thing for me. I usually only buy them if I know I wont have time to prepare anything for my self (or am feeling lazy).

I have my preferred brands to buy certain ready made meals. Usually a long process of trial and error trying out different brands and finding the one that best suits my taste. Sometimes that exact product happens to be sold out. I could of course choose something else, but when the idea of eating something is in my mind it's hard to change. So I have to resort buying some other brand.

As this happens so rarely I hardly remember what I have already tried preciously and judged not good. So often I end up having to eat something that I don't enjoy that much. It would have been better to choose something else to eat after all.

Collision warning

It's nice to have all those safety and driver assistant features in my car, but in extreme weather conditions, when you most would need them, they struggle to work. In winter the sensors are often blocked by snow or ice and render them useless.

Of course those are just nice additional features. When they don't work it's just like driving regular car the old fashioned way. You just need ro rely on your own perception to catch all those potentially dangerous situations (which you should still do even when all the assistive functions are operational).

Yesterday I faced a situation in between those two. The sensors were working but they were covered by ice due to the challenging weather we've had here over the past few days. The problem is, the system doesn't always detect that the sensors are actually blocked, especially the proximity ones. Because of this the car was assuming there was something behind the car when I was backing of from my driveway and engaged emergency braking. I was hardly able to get on the road after a few overrides and then the same happened when I started driving forward.

There might already be cars that can drive by themselves in perfect conditions, but we are far away from the system that can handle all conditions.
