Yodeller

Welcome to the Yodeller: my ongoing project to try and write something every day. You can read more about the background from here. If you are a new reader you might want to start from the beginning.

"Quick" nap

Today after I had finished my dinner I felt a vit tired. I decided to lay down on the couch and close my eyes for a moment.

After what felt like 15 - maybe 30 minutes max I opened my eyes. I felt a bit disoriented, thought I must have fallen a sleep for a moment - until I checked the clock: quarter past nine! I had slept for almost three hours.

I do occasionally take these afternoon naps, but even if I do fall asleep it's usually for half an hour max. Just enough to feel refreshed enough for the evening but not too much to not being able to get to sleep early enough for my regular schedule.

After I got up, still feeling a bit sleepy I also almost triggered my morning routine while feeding the cats. Only realized this when I had already water boiling on the kettle for my "morning" coffee.

I don't know why I was so tired today. I did sleep well last night and there wasn't anything heavy and tiring I would have done during the day.

Doing your research

We had our annual board meeting of our housing cooperative yesterday where we decided to start planning the renovation of our water piping. After the meeting I started doing some research on the subject, specially about the material of the pipes.

While there are a couple of options to reuse the existing pipes with different techniques I think the better option is to get completely new pipes. For that there is also a couple of options, mainly whether having them made of copper or plastic.

The former one is the traditional, copper has been used for ages in water pipes and their good and bad sides are quite well known. Plastic on the other hand is relatively new material to be used on water piping (it has been more widespread for "only" a few decades).

Searching for bad things for either option led to quite a rabbit hole. There were a lot of "information" against both of them - how copper is poisonous in itself for humans and how much chemicals can dissolve into water from plastic. It was quite hard to find neutral comparison between them, only those that exaggerated the potential threats of either one of those.

In the end I managed to find a few neutral articles made by public actors like health officials which pretty much said that: yes , there might be some health effects with both, but they are mostly negligible and that both are considered safe options for everyday use.

It's winter again

We've had a couple of "springs" already this year only to be set back to the winter again. The first one was unexpected and came early. I'm sure nobody thought of that as the final one at the time.

The second time looked a bit more promising. It was late enough that it could have very well bean real, uet early spring. As with the first one this one too felt a little too good to be true. It was more than probable that we would still get a set back before the real spring would arrive.

Even if this is rather common patter every year there is one group of people that take any first signs of a spring way too optimistic: car owners. I know few people who already changed summer tires during the first "spring" and many changed them suring the second one. Yet here we are again, back to the winter wonderland. Even if the snow isn't really sticking around for long this time it can still be quite slippery especially during the night and morning times.

Even if those who did change the tires (and didn't change them back to winter ones) tey to drive as carefully as possible they are causing trouble at the traffic driving slowly and causing traffic jams.

Building a spaceship is hard work

Making something that go into space is the actual rocket science. Sure someday there will be other methods to get there but I'm pretty sure that will require something much harder than that.

Building just a fake spaceship takes a lot of effort too, even if you don't have to solve the real hard questions. We are trying to make a school look and feel like a starship! Definitely not an easy task.

Even if we don't need it to actually go into space there things that would be easier if we could actually send it into space. Some problems wouldn't even exist for us. We need to fale many things just to make it feel like that. And that's a lot of extra effort.

An engine of a real spaceship might for example over heat or otherwise malfunction. No spaceship designer need to worry about making that happen. They only need to worry about how to deal with it. With a fake engine we also need to fake those issues and make them happen. Everything also needs to look like a "real" spaceship whereas it doesn't really matter what things look like when you can actually go into space.

Back to the deep end

Today, after work we will once again have our psychological safety groups organized "deep talk" evening. Last time the event was fantastic and I stayed with a few fellow colleagues until the wee hours discussing various things.

When I saw the invite for this second session I was immediately in. Really looking forward for more of these discussions. Unfortunately I have a relative early morning tomorrow as I need to leave for our upcoming larp project's prep event so this time I can't hang out for too long (and need to skip the wine as well).

It's a shame I can't stay later. The discussions, while being really good already at the beginning of the evening really elevated towards the midnight. But as these seems to have become quite popular afterwork events I'm sure there will be many more opportunities to dig deeper into this fascinating topics and discussions in the future.
